The Exotic One - RC 1/16 Type 97 Shinhoto Chi-Ha
« on: December 26, 2017, 09:43:04 PM »
The Type 97 Chi-Ha was the second most built japanese tank in WW II (besides light Type 95 Ha-Go).

The initial version used the short 57mm gun, that couldn’t deal with enemy tanks. Therefore a new, longer gun (caliber 47mm) was developed and mounted 1942 - 1943 in a redesigned turret. This type was designated Type 97 Shinhoto Chi-Ha and was built in 930 numbers.

Starting the report with some design development:

The kit:
Again, this kit is a cooperation of Christian Ludwig and me. I hope this report will be seen also in Japan, because for me the japanese tanks of WW II are remarkable 8).

…to be continued…

Starting the built with the lower hull…

After these steps the lower hull (without bogies) is roughly done, means switching to the upper hull. A rack is needed for the different angle plates.  Additionally the upper hull is completely asymmetrical.

Freddy

Next task is the suspension. The links are made of 2x2mm and 3mm aluminum…

…with limiting stop bolts.

All parts of the running gear:

pics in detail:

Idler wheel parts…

…and tension adjustment happens with the backside screw.

Some little work is done at the upper hull, i.e. gear / driver hatches and front MG ball mount…

…and hatches at the backside.

Bravo!  Attention to Japanese AFVs is long overdue, so this is a most interesting build.  Thank you for showing us.

Hi Freddy, Nice build it's great to see something different.

How do you go about getting consistant/uniform bends in 1+ mm styrene parts ? Such as the lower hull front, driver's position and soon to be built turret. I know from experience that even just a little to much heat the styrene disappears.

Cheers
Damo

Thanks guys!  ;) The idea was to build something unusual, that´s why this report is called....

I don´t use any heat for bending because it´ll shrink uncontrollable. A round pencil or a bolt helps bending, maybe with a little back and forth.
Max. thickness of the styrene for bending is 1.5mm (all the bent parts you can see at the pictures), but that´s almost too stiff; better is 1mm but on the other hand it´s bad for milling.

You´re welcome, Damo  ;D

There are no „standard“ gears available, that fits in the tiny front hull, so only one way is possible: to build customized one.
Size 25mm gear motors are used; they are strong enough for this lightweight tank.

The housing is made of glued 3mm aluminum plates:

All parts of the gears…

…and mounted:

Originally I planned to use Pz. III return rollers…

…but then switched to scale printed roller mountings and using early Pz. IV return rollers…

…and Pz. III metall tracks which were cutted on each side to get overall track width of 19mm.

I think it´s looking good  ;D

Some accessoires at the hull. Parts for left/right muffler…

…bin at the backside…

…tow lug and head lamp.

Next step: the turret. These are the main parts of the turret:

Building at first a rack…

…for mounting the mantlet.

The gun have to be mounted from the inside, fixing with some plastic sheets.

Accessoires at the backside of the turret:

Excellent project, good to see someone interested in Japanese Tanks, they have a interesting story and history. It will be good to see the rest of the build to completion and the paint scheme.

Finishing the turret with the roof and commanders cupola.

That means, the kit of the Type 97 Shinhoto Chi-Ha is ready built, but needs a lot of bolts, hinges and handholds…

Looking great Freddy, nice to see you feathered the leading edge on the front guards, making to look thinner as sheet metal guards would be..... 8) 8) 8)

You´re right Damo; it looks more realistic and matches with the original design of the track guards.

After mounting of almost 500 rivets, 20 hinges and several handholds, the tank is awaiting primer and a three tone coloring after…

The light gray primer made minor issues visible…
Attached are now the scale printed return rollers.
