And more. Correct date of photo's 31/10/2009.
Being an Early production M41, much of the detail is different from the Mid & late production vehicles - Sprocket & idler with lightening holes, different tow rope brackets, GTL mount, number of engine grille hatches, hinges & stops (5 LHS, 6 RHS, vs 3 each side of the later vehicles), early turret with larger cast area - nose & lower turret.
Early light mounts with horseshoe splash guards, area around drivers hatch  & surrounding the turret ring cast, rather than welded

Came across a Facebook page for the Armoured Museum Charitable Trust, who have acquired NZ30549, and given her a much needed facelift.

An update on the AMCT facebook page
Engine being rewired [ Guests cannot view attachments ] & the vehicle dressed - pioneer tools, jerrycans, canvas bag? behind turret stowage box & cam net [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

"Recently the boys took a day trip down to Waiberia to the QEII Army Museum to visit Grant and Sam to pick their brains on what appears to be our major problem, the magnetos and to discuss their M41 (NZ30548, Assassin) and see what changes they have done to their engine?

To keep things simple they've done away with the magnetos and replaced them with a couple of Falcon distributors and re-wired it as per pics , we on the other hand have rebuilt the mags, rewired the dash and are rebuilding our booster box by copying one we borrowed from the Army Museum"

No progress to report on my Cent build – otherwise occupied, getting up close & personal with NZ 30549 which was at the Frankton Thunder 2017 event – March 4th & 5th.
A couple of things I noticed that stood out – the casting number on the mantlet, below the telescope cover – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] –
The bulge under the coax at the bottom of the mantlet – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
‘This Side Out’ marking on the sprockets – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
The cast final drive housings on the rear plate – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
The cast turret rear beneath the bustle – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
The asymmetry of the LHS & RHS turret beneath the bustle – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Got a few of these to come

Early cable guide – side on – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] .
Five engine hatch stops on the LHS – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] -
Had a good look at the early angular GTL – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] - this is slightly twisted, possibly in collision with another AFV – the rear lifting eye was broken & the LHS rear fender bent  – possibly at the same time – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] - cut out in fender  - [ Guests cannot view attachments ] - casting number at the top of the bracket – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] – the wing nut was made up to replace the original – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] – GTL mounting

And something ironic – recall those times when you’ve been told to remove sprue burr from the kit parts? Someone else didn’t do that either – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] –
A major difference – back in 2009 when I originally photographed 30549, I spent about 10 mins scrubbing away caked on mud, dirt & dust from the modification plate, so see if it showed the Vehicle Serial number. Yes, I specifically took a brush to do that. Anyway, it was to no avail, couldn’t see any numbers. But since the sandblasting & repainting, the numbers are now visible, so took these pics – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] – unfortunately it appears I forgot to change the setting to macro.
Good to see the 60 inch pry bar in place – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] – the long black thing  - you don’t often see it on restored tanks, as they tend to disappear because they’re so useful & popular.
The munted pioneer tool rack  - [ Guests cannot view attachments ] - has been replaced with a new one – [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Could not access the top of the vehicle – Health & Safety rules mean that if any one climbs on & fall off, the owners are liable.

Rec’d some more photos from Andrew showing the drain plug at the bottom of the cast final drive housings – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] – (my photos just caught the edge of these, so wasn’t sure if the plugs were there or not)
And 4 of the turret top rear – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
Compare [ Guests cannot view attachments ] with HL turret – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] -  & how far out of place the HL pintle mount is – this doesn’t show up well on drawings, as usually the 50 Cal Browning is mounted in the drawings & obscures the actual position, also notice that the orientation of the base of the pintle is not square, but slightly skewed, to allow it to be folded down on to the low rest behind the hatch hinge.
It also shows to advantage, the 3 brackets – 2 x Y, 1 x T, behind the loaders hatch, in front of the blower cap. I think these brackets are for external stowage of the 50 Cal – sans barrel - and if so are unique to the early M41’s. There is no mention of these in neither  the M41 nor the M47 Tank Manuals.

Compare [ Guests cannot view attachments ] with HL turret – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] – note how the blower cap on the HL is undersized. A close up of the blower cap – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] - reveals the cap does not have a smooth surface – in contrast to that fitted to the later M41s - – [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] –
Plus it features a cast number (4401), though whether this is a Part number or a Serial number is not known. If it’s a serial number, could this be the same vehicle?  - [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

The guys attended the Huntly Anzac Day Dawn Parade. As part of the prep for that, they waterblasted it & applied degreaser to remove the shine from the paint. Also had a 5 min repair to do on the APU & 3 hrs later....

Suffered a bit of damage to a road wheel when reloading. They've also installed a new Mantlet cover, which they had made up by the local saddler. Unfortunately it's not totally accurate, but should do the job. I've supplied Andrew with drawings & photos of the real thing.
