Kiwi M41's Various
« on: October 04, 2012, 12:03:40 PM »
The first lot of these were taken by my father in the 1960's soon after the introduction of the M41 to NZ. This is before the fenders were chopped off diagonally & before cable reels were added to the turrets.

Found these 2 photos on NZMVCC site – M41’s being rail transported from Wellington – hill-scape in the 2nd pic confirms that. Presumably this was soon after the M41’s arrived in NZ on the SS Galway in October 1960.
Points of interest – the M41’s are over width for the flat cars, so they’re sitting on balks of wood (rail sleepers?) to spread the load/overhang. Head lights & Tail lights are covered in protective tape. Raised decking over the engine compartment to accommodate boxes of spares(?) & tools – note de-stowed condition of vehicles.
Turret Top brackets taped.
The Tow Pintle is in the deployed position, not in the stowage bracket. Original full square fenders. Pioneer rack in sloped forward configuration. Turret stowage box partially dismounted – probably to improve clearance as the box & jerry can holders protrude beyond the sides when the gun is in the travel lock. Early pattern Gun Travel lock & mounting is just visible, centre LHS. Note the shipping stencil locations – rear plate, RHS forward stowage box, turret sides – unfortunately not legible.
Turret Stowage box arrangement is more visible in the 2nd photo. Note each vehicle has the APU muffler mounted forward alongside the pioneer rack. This suggests it was deliberately removed & placed over the rear right main muffler – with the odd exception.
Flat car name/type – MATILDA. More shipping stencils visible on the turret stowage box & glacis, along with the US Military Assistance sticker (these annoyed General Thornton who ordered their removal – NZ paid for our M41’s they were not a US handout).
