So you want to buy a Henglong
« on: February 23, 2013, 03:06:01 AM »
so you want to buy a Heng long tiger and not sure what's what?
here i will try and explain the differences not only in price but what to expect for your /$$$$
also covered will be upgrades and hopefully answer a few burning issues like Metal gearboxes and tracks, batteries and basic mechanical upgrades
what will be covered are whats available right now

To start your basic O.T.B. H/Long Tiger

now this is the newer version Smoke and Sound
typically 3 types of drive boards are in there:
an early RX13

a mid RX14

and the later RX18

a word of caution:
some retaliers still have the older Non Smoke and sound style tigers
heres a picture of the box:

these are still ok but in my honest opinion you shouldnt pay anymore than 40-50 for them as if you want to upgrade to a Smoke and Sound later then you will need a full electronics package ie drive board, receiver board and transmitter also a fair amount of soldering will be required

next on the list is: How do i open the lid?
heres some fairly easy shots of how to remove the upper hull

that covers the bottom screws now for the elusive upper screws that are hidden by the tracks.
For ease its recommended to remove the tracks,
for this remove the centre sprocket hub cap and unscrew the bolt holding the sprockets
pull and wiggle the sprockets loose till they come off (sometimes they are really tight and caution is required so you dont break the tracks)
now you have the three screws available to unscrew

not shown in that picture is the screw just at the back above the last roadwheel

now the lid is unscrewed you need to undo the aerial connector that is covered by a length of heatshrink tubing this should just slid away leaving the connector visible

also carefully pull out the multi connector

now the lid is free and you can access the lower hull and all it's workings

ok so the lids off and you want to upgrade your plastic gearbox
1 of the main reasons for this is the plastic gears are fitted with a slipper clutch so if your tank gets stuck the clutches come in and help to prevent board burnout with carefull driving this shouldnt happen (but not impossible)
the clutches are annoying as driving on anything but concrete or other similar smooth surface is near on impossible
here are in my opinion some options open to you as a direct replacement and improvement
first white metal gearboxes an improvement on the plastic boxes as the slipper clutch is gone

if your after a heavy usage go anywhere tank then i wouldnt recommend these gearboxes as they will strip fairly easy under a heavy load ie going through sticky wet mud or long grass
note of caution: Remember it is a scale Tank and not even the real thing will do things you might want it to without breaking something/burning out

the next better metal gearboxes are the newer steel geared boxes

these i would recommend for heavy usage and metal tracks

another option to these is the brass gearboxes from mato and asiatam

and again a much bigger improvement on the above

This and the KT are probably the most well supplied tanks in the aspect of upgrades, the only limit is money as usual.... ::)

I've bought from all these guys and all are good vendors, preference is our "Home Boys" of course and Mark and the Tank Army guys are great price and shipping wise and the product is usually the same... :)

Hope this helps.
