Hi Philipat
Just realised I posted the wrong picture - the fitted pic should be this  71865-0

Am intending to place the T/C's white MG light in the coax position. Not sure what Tank-Modellbau's turret MG looks like?

Charging tracer BB's with the UV LED - was a while ago, can't rightly recall, though I know it worked on glow-in-the-dark plastic tubes, that is a similar material. Yes the warning light circuit is the one I'm intending to use.

Okay, think I'll try the warning circuit.  The headlamp circuit wasn't working for me.

The Bulldog coax MG looked a little like this:  http://www.tank-modellbau.de/eng_149/Sherman_turret_machine_gun.  I have one, but it looks like Tank-Modellbau doesn't make it anymore.

Looks like they also have a new axle support with bearings that even slightly resembles the real thing:  http://www.tank-modellbau.de/eng_205/Drive_shaft_support_M41

Hi Guys
The Turret Ventilator Caps arrived 72375-0 - http://www.shapeways.com/product/HGX9HFV6R/1-16-m41-bulldog-ventilator-cover?li=shareProduct -  They are considerably larger than the HL version (28.97mm across vs 20mm)72377-172379-2 But are proportion to the size of the HL turret 72381-3 72397-4
Drilled out the bolt holes & applied 1/2 inch pins 72383-572385-6, and made up a mesh screen ring to fit under the cap.
One issue we had, the bolts are out of alignment when fitted, so made an extra cut out in the underside ring to correct this 72387-772389-872391-9 also applied paint.
When fitted 72393-1072395-11

Very cool.  Those caps look nice.  Were those sewing/dress pins?

Also, is that window screen for the mesh?

Hi Phillipat
Pins - yes, 1/2 inch dress making pins.
The mesh - it's expanded aluminium mesh, from an old light shade, to come close to this 72409-0
Window screen mesh is too square to achieve the 'look' of this, but fine if you want the square mesh look.

As related in my 3D Printing post - http://hobbyhavoc.com/forum/index.php?topic=4036.msg39623#new - Reply 14 - I rec'd the Cable Reels & Larkspur Aerial Bases.

As related, I had issues separating the parts - they are brittle, especially the fine thin ones.
Also they look a lot better when painted. 72746-072736-1
I decided to forgo the printed axle - it's a bit short, and would have to be glued to the turret exterior, I wanted a more secure fitment, hence the cut down nail.
Drilled a hole in the turret 72738-2 inserted the nail - from inside (no glue at this stage) 72740-3 added the L shaped guide/spacer 72742-4 then the reel 72744-5

Flooding good Mal, I like the way u come up with the ideas to solve many problems, I find solve one that creates another lol
Do you think the 3D parts a a lot better than stock so to speak?

Cheers

Hi Gra
Problems - solve one, create another - so very true. Strangely enough also applies to 3D printing.
Where stock parts exist & are accurate, they're fine. Where there's nothing, or completely inaccurate, 3D has the potential to fill the void.
Of late on Armorama they've being complaining about the lack of quality of some prints, can't say I've struck that yet.
I think they're best for 1 off parts, multiples get expensive fast.
There is a new tech coming, saw it at the weekend in a Popular Mechanics, about 25 to 100 times faster than 3D printing, but probably won't be around for quite a while.

Inspired by my visit to NZ 30549 & the fact that the final drive housings on early M41’s are cast, not welded like the later ones – 83079-083081-1 -  applied some bog  - 83083-283085-383087-4 – this one was a bit more difficult, as the phone box is still in place, so applied masking tape to it to keep excess bog off -
In case you're wondering whether this is a double post of "Blanking" - notice this one has tracks on & the rear plate is full size - 'blanking' has been shortened.

I’m not a fan of painted periscopes, as they don’t look realistic to me & you don’t get the shine when reflected light hits it right (gloss clear coat doesn’t quite do it, either).
However making ‘glass’ periscopes out of clear acrylic can be a bit of a pain, especially if you have a few to do.
With that in mind, I asked Chris Ludwig if he’d be willing to CNC cut some for me from clear acrylic.
The intention was to have some cut to fit the Commanders cupola on both M41 & M26, and of course, they’re not both the same size

M41 - Part measures 4mm X 11mm. Shape wise they are an oval - two half circles at either end of a rectangle. 5 pieces to a set. Need 7 sets for all my M41's - a real incentive for mass production.

M41 – 2840, 2841, 2843, 2844, 2845, 2846, 2847, and the modified blower cap 2848

I’ve also done some hull-fender gap work on AVRENZE, though have not detailed it in pics, as it’s a repeat of work done on my other M41’s – 87547-087549-1–
Was intending to do more, but got a bit distracted – when I went to the Frankton Thunder Event in March 2017, spent a bit of time measuring stuff – including the drivers periscopes – measurements in mm 1:1, then 1:16

Hood width   220   13.7
Base width   210   13.1
Height   85   5.3
Hood length   110   6.8
Overhang length    30   1.8

The height – 85 is the height of the visible glass portion of the periscope (85mm 1:1 = 5.3mm 1:16th) – 87551-287553-3
My previous acrylic periscopes have been around 8mm – so had some work to do. Initially cut the 1st VB (Vision Block) at the 5mm mark, but then realised it might be better to do it differently – 87555-487557-587559-6– the advantage of not doing a straight cut – 1 - not as much to cut, 2 – the resulting L shape is easier to fit & the mating (gluing) surface is larger, 3 - the ‘glass’ looks deeper – probably an optical illusion explained in a high school science class on physics I’ve all but completely forgotten (physics not a favourite subject)– 87561-787563-8– all 4 done – 87565-987567-10– framing added – 87569-1187571-12–
Also redid the outer guards – which you can see in 87573-13 – but forgot to photo comparisons.

Mal

Comparing the model periscopes with the real thing – the ‘roof’ of the drivers hole is much too high on the HL model.

Did some comparison photos of the periscope guards – 87876-0 – old one right, new lowered one left – 87878-1 – side shot - 87880-2 – angled
In place side - 87882-3 - front – 87884-4 –
Glued the periscopes, frames & guards in place – 87886-587888-6– had a closer look at these post glue – the centre one is out of place & needs to be redone – 87890-787892-8-

Took a 2mm scale Hardware Hex head bolt & nut to fit, plus a length of brass tube – 87894-9 – need to trim the length off the bolt, then glue the tube to the side of the middle periscope guard, glue the nut & bolt to the side of the periscope guard - but in light of the guard needing to be redone, will have to hang fire.

A while ago I got some CNC cut stowage box handles from Chris in 1mm plastic sheet – from his new M48 kit. I wanted them to see if they’d be better than either the HL moulded handles or my wire versions, on both my M41’s & M26’s – 87898-0 – the CNC sheet includes both handles & hasps – to padlock the handles, though I thought those looked a bit too thick, so made some out of litho plate -  87900-187902-2–
Comparing the handles to photos of the real thing – 87904-387906-487908-5-  the CNC cut versions look too thin, so I glued 2 together & because I wanted to be able to turn them, drilled a vertical hole & used a pin as axle.
These photos aren’t too good, but give an idea – 87910-687912-787914-8–
The hasps on NZ30549 have been beefed up/replaced, so will probably follow that route & make them out of brass - the litho plate isn't robust enough.

I’ve also asked Chris if he can produce the handles in both 1.5mm & 2mm sheet, to see which is best.

Applied some bog to RHS gap between the stowage boxes, with non stick foil to prevent it going where it wasn’t needed – 87916-987918-10 – foil & former removed – 87920-11 -

Hi Philipat
Gald you like it. Those depressions/drains on the stowage boxes aren't very noticeable from ground level, but once you're standing on the fenders....

Haven't touched the tank this week - book time, instead.
