Great progress Mal.

Mine is off to a friend so I will get to use it and see it.

Have pointed him this way for your build.

Looking at the fender stowage boxes, those X’s & Slots cut into the lids, just don’t look right. So, got some Evergreen 1.5mm half round – 82643-0 – and applied it – 82645-182647-282649-3– also got some Du Bro Cat 119 aircraft hinges – 82651-482653-5- I had been going to make hinges from Plastruct L or T beams, but the space to fit them under the lids is very tight.
Also started work on periscopes for the T/C’s cupola, using 2mm clear acrylic – 82655-6 - still quite a way to go.

Made some progress on the Cent – Return Rollers. There are 8 double return rollers on the Cent, plus 2 single rollers  near the sprockets on the early Cents – later ones had another single roller near the idler.
Had to get some screw extensions to allow the Pz III return roller supports to be used on the Cent, as the Cent Rollers are double rollers so much deeper than the Pz III ones.
The screw extensions I got are M3 X 15mm – also known as motherboard screws or standoffs. Had also tried Chicago Screws, but they’re imperial thread & a bit too big.
Of course in order to use these, the holes in the plastic angle adapters needs to be increased from 3mm to 6mm – 83093-0 – the corresponding holes in the hull need to be increased by the same amount too – 83095-1 –
The axle holes in the 3D printed rollers need to be redrilled – 83097-2 -  think I used a 3.2mm drill, then a bit more filing to get them to move freely – 83099-383101-4–  The Pz III roller axles are 3mm, but have ‘knurling’ which means the hole has to be a bit bigger.
Assembling the bits – 83103-5 – Bottom - Pz III roller axle & 15mm hex extn,
2nd – with Pz III roller mount & angle adapter with 3mm hole – the axle is way too short,
3rd – Cent Double roller with Pz III axle-  not much protrudes,
Top – Cent double roller, Pz III axle, angle adapter with 6mm hole & 15mm hex extn – the exterior unit complete (more bits required on the inside hull).

More done on the return rollers, have now assembled all the rollers – 83234-083236-1 – then spent time dry fitting them in place – lots of filing req’d – 83238-283240-383242-483244-5 –
Then spent time dry fitting the Horstmann units, so they fit the slots in the hull – again a lot of filing req’d – 83246-683248-783250-883252-983254-10
Also, for the 1st & 3rd unit, each side, the  centre bit needs to be reduced – 83256-11 -  as it conflicts with the Pz III return roller cones , on the real Cent the Return roller cones are actually half cones – 83258-1283260-1383262-14-  so the problem doesn’t occur.

Spent some time working on the T/C cupola. I asked Chris if he would do some CNC periscopes in clear acrylic, rather than white styrene, as provided in the kit. His answer – 83541-0 – had to clean them up a bit, as per usual. Having applied a file to remove the burrs, I placed them face down on masking tape – 83543-1 – then applied silver paint – 83545-283547-3. On reflection, maybe should have used gunmetal rather than sliver?

In comparison to the original white plastic ones – 83549-4 - 2.5mm thick vs 1.5mm thick, so added 1mm white styrene to back – 83551-5 – added structural pieces to cupola – 83553-6 – having filed an angle on the back of each periscope, added periscopes to cupola – 83555-783557-8– applied green paint – 83559-9 – then guards – 83561-10 – made the peri-bino guard from brass, as well as the guard behind the hinge – 83563-1183565-12

Spent some time working on the suspension parts – cutting tubing/bushings for the Horstmann bogies – 12 X 9mm X OD4mm Tube – 83695-083697-1– in place – 83699-283701-3– then removed rings from the sprues – 83703-483705-5– after clean-up & adding them to the bogies – 83707-683709-7–

Bogies lined up as they will be on the Cent, with stub axles in place – 83711-883713-9

Then more tube cutting – this time for the road wheel bushings – 12 X 9.5mm X OD3mm Tube – 83715-0 –

How the stub axle attaches to wheel & bogie – M3 X 8mm Socket Head Cap Screw, M3 Washer, Bogie, M3 threaded Stub Axle – M3 washer, 9.5mm X OD3mm bushing, M3 washer, M3 X 16mm Socket Head Cap Screw – 83717-183719-2– bogie/wheel unit – 83721-383723-4– bogie wheel less – 83725-583727-6 – NB the M3 X 8mm Socket Head Cap Screw might be better replaced with a M X 6mm Socket Head Cap Screw, the 1st one was ok, but as this last pic shows this one’s a bit loose.

I ordered some 8mm OD X 4mm ID X 3 mm W sealed bearings in order to  make the single return roller by the sprocket - 83916-0 -  Unfortunately the axle is 3mm & the brass bushings don’t quite fit. May need to get 8mm OD X 3mm ID X 3 mm W sealed bearings instead.
Early Cents only have the rear set – by the sprocket, but in 1948, a front set was added as well, by the idler. All the pics I have of NZ Cent’s (1st Cent rec’d in NZ - 1951) show both sets.

Spent some time working on the sprockets – filing the edges off the sprocket teeth – 83918-183920-283922-3.

Assembled the cable reel on the turret, secured it with  a M2 X 20mm bolt – 83924-483926-583928-683930-7– though appears to be a bit large in comparison to the 3D print version – 83932-8 – the other thing, this is the later version cable reel, more commonly seen on Chieftain & late Cents, the early Cent cable reel was a simpler design.

Revamped the turret stowage bin attachment system, binned my previous method & used 6 X 10mm X M2 bolts, 2 per each bin.  Bolts added inside the turret, so the screw end sticks out, Applied nut to exterior, so as to hold bolt in place – 83934-083936-1-  then bin, so that only 1 nut is needed to hold the bin – 83938-283940-3-  2nd bolt just levels the bin, the new bolts are less obvious from above – 83942-483944-5– bins now open fully -  83946-6 -

Fitted the Peri-bino guard, had to trim the surrounds a tad to fit it – 83948-783950-8– amazingly, the ref photo is the same size as the guard – 83952-9 -
Re the peri-bino, recalled that I had some from my 1/35th M577 kit – 83954-10 – unfortunately it’s way too small - 83956-11

More work on the Peri-bino – drilled holes in the cupola – 84020-0– fitted styrene rod into the holes – 84022-1 – made blocks from 2.5mm sheet (previous turret stowage bin attachment system repurposed), drilled hole thru centre, placed on rods – 84024-2 - drilled a hole in the front & some filing, sanding & grinding later – 84026-384028-4 – removed ‘heads’ fitted ally tubing – 84030-5 – replaced heads – 84032-6 – guard in place – 84034-7 – didn’t quite look right so added slivers of ally tubing – 84036-884038-9 – re mounted 84040-10, guard back in place - 84042-11

Spent some time working on the turret - marking the position of the mantlet cover securing rails – 84296-084298-184300-2

Took some foil and moulded it over the mantlet (gun removed), trimmed the edges to the rails, took it off & flattened it out, repeated shape on paper, which gives a good idea of both total length & height encompassed – 84302-384304-484306-5

Then after much checking through my various Cent books, drew up a template – 84308-6- It became apparent that there have been a number of different versions of the mantlet cover – on the earlier ones – 84310-7 -  the cutout for the gun tube is square – which is the version I’ve drawn.
It later became rounded. The introduction of the 50 Cal RMG also forced a change – a large window to encompass both the RMG – 50 Cal, and the repositioned coax - 30 Cal.

Some also had footman loops welded to the mantlet at the compass points (N, S, E, W – in the vertical plane) around the gun tube, with corresponding holes in the cover to secure it in place – 84408-0– Addition of the search light mounting rail added zips, so it could be opened/closed when the search light was mounted/dismounted – 84410-1 -
It’s also common to see extra reinforcement patches added to the corners of the cover. And the odd repair patch to cover a hole – the equivalent of rusting & chipping of the paintwork.

The top of the cover appears to be double thickness cloth, with 6 strips equally spaced along it – at first I thought these were just reinforcing strips, but now wonder if they’re actually pockets for stiffeners (like battens on sails – 84412-2 - ) to prevent the canvas from sagging into the turret-mantlet gap & pooling water.
Have yet to cut it out & try it for size, initial ones will be paper, once I’m happy with it shape-wise, I’ll replicate it in OD Pertex 6. Why? Because I have a ready supply, it’s the right colour & most important, it’s grain is very fine, so it looks ‘scale’. It’s the same stuff I used on my Scorpion stowage bin cover.

Added a bit more detail to the turret roof, using 2mm X 2mm styrene rod. There are 3 wire conduit access/exit points on the roof, 2 for the smoke grenade dischargers, and one behind the cupola, for the cable reel telephone connection – 84414-084416-184418-284420-384422-484424-5
I was in too much of a hurry making these & should have drilled a hole (for the wire) in each prior to cutting it off the rod. Holding a 2mm X 2mm X 3mm piece & drilling it, is not an easy exercise, even with pliers. Compounded this error by gluing in place on the turret prior to drilling, making access to the drill site more difficult.
Be aware, that depending on which version of the turret you’re building (Chris’s kit has the early style as standard) – the loaders hatches were repositioned - resulting in the Left Hand conduit access point appearing to have been shifted, but actually it’s the vent & periscope housing having been shifted/changed, as well as the hatch position, making the landscape look totally different, doesn’t help that the ref photos are taken from different positions – 84426-684428-784430-884432-984434-1084436-1184438-12 [ Specified attachment is not available ]– cent early turret top, Cent late turret Top –

Oops should have added these - the two different turret top layouts - 84440-084442-1

Added cable to the gunner sight unit – 84444-2 - there should be another for the spray unit, but not sure it’ll fit in the space – 84446-384448-4-
Marked out position of conduit runs on the turret  - 84450-584452-684454-7- & drilled holes where the hold down bolts go.
Drilled holes in base of smoke grenade dischargers for where wire enters units – 84456-8
Drilled conduit access points on turret – glue fully dried – 84458-9

Drilled thin brass plate – 84460-0 – cut it into a strip – 84462-1 – cut it into short strips, with a 1.5mm bolt thru the hole & emplaced – 84464-284466-384468-4 –
Added wire conduit – 1mm wire, folded strip of brass around wire to hold in place – 84470-584472-6–

With the Peri –bino, I wanted to add lenses, so tried adding canopy glue to the lens holes, as it dried I added more – 84474-784476-884478-984480-1084482-11–

Made a jig for the footman loops, 4mm to the outer edges of the holes – 84484-12 – this being based on the footman loop being 7.5mm total length, bridge being 3.9mnm, the 2 ends – (welded) being 1.8mm – 84486-13 – under bridge height being 1mm

Finally got back to work on the Cent – still waiting on parts from Chris, think he might have gone on Holiday.
Anyway, got some M3 X 6mm socket head screws to fix the stub axles to the Horstmann swing arms. Long slow job with Arthritis – 84892-084894-184896-2
Added spacers to the male horizontal shocks – 84898-3 – ally spacer 3.9mm OD, with 6mm heat shrink
When it came to adding the bolts (M2.5 X 8mm) to attach these to the upper swing arms, the washers needed to be trimmed a bit to fit – 84900-4 –
The female shocks washers didn’t require alteration – 84902-5 –
Where the shocks fit on the swing arms, the holes needs to be threaded – the next job – 84904-684906-7-

Not an exciting part of the build, but progress.

Cut the threads into the upper swing arms – 2.5mm thread – 84910-0 – then bolted (M2.5 X 8mm)on the shock absorber halves – 84912-1 – when fitted to the Horstmann bogies – 84914-2 -  added the springs (though have heard this may need replacing with softer versions) – 84916-384918-4– bogie again, with spring – 84920-5.
A bit worried about dissimilar metal contact (Ally – steel), so will probably have to disassemble these & prime & Loctite.  Couple of threads are a bit ‘sloppy’ – prime & Loctite should fix that.

De sprued, cleaned up & glued these bits – 84966-084968-184970-284972-3– they hold the dummy shock absorbers to the sides of the Horstmann units.
Some Ref pics – 84974-484976-584978-6– last 2 from Stephen Whites Cent build - quite a difference between 1/16th, real & 1/6th

Then worked on attaching the sprocket rings to the sprockets with M1.2 X 8mm bolts – 84980-0 – Prime Miniatures has a driver to do this – 84982-1 –
Though with arthritis, it’s difficult to hold & turn – so dug out my tap & die set & borrowed the T handle – 84984-2 -  which made using it easier.
Having finished one side of the sprocket, added the 2nd one & applied the track, so that both sprocket rings align – 84986-3–

Also modified the driver/T handle, by putting 2 layers of 6mm heat shrink on the driver – 84988-4 -  so that the T handle didn’t slip down – it’s held via one handle screwed in – 84990-5 – then applied a cable tie for extra security – 84992-6

Only used 6 bolts per side – 84994-7 -  18 is overkill – would require 72 for both sprockets – not sure I have that many. The hole in the sprocket is only 1mm, so can take a while to spud in the M1.2mm bolt, shouldn’t need nuts on these, they’re pretty tight – 84996-8 –
Both sprockets done – 84998-985000-10- though only 4 bolts in the 2nd – need to open another packet of bolts.

Hi Wobbly
"...patience of a saint" - Nah, not me, you must be thinking of someone else?

Bit more done, while I was working on the bolts, thought about adding the idler mounts, which require 9 X M1.2 X 8mm bolts per side.
Redrilled the hull side bolt holes – 85146-0 - then the idler holes, with a 1mm bit, to help ‘spudding in’ used a 2mm bit on the idler too, though only shallow, not all the way through.
Used 1 inch dress pins to pin the idlers in place – hard to hold in place & bolt simultaneously otherwise  – 85148-185150-2–
Something to watch out for – the M1.2 bolts will shear very easily if over tightened - & getting the head out of the driver can be tricky  - 85152-3–
Put 3 bolts in each side so far – 85154-485156-5.
I’ve been told the aluminium figure 8’s (provide the link between the idler wheels & idler mounts & subject to quite a bit of stress on the end of the track run) are not very robust & need to be replaced by a steel fitting.
I think the steel unit from the Henntech tensioners would work well as a replacement – the trick being if Guido will sell them separately from the rest of the idler.
In case you’re wondering about the Gib stopping tape on the hull bottom – it’s not Zimmeritt – just part of my idea to save the hull from scratching when in use, intend to apply a couple of coats of What A Job over it to both protect the hull & as a surfacer.
Longsheep used a 3mm Ally plate on the bottom for his build – thought that was a bit extreme.

Haven’t posted for a while. Finally rec’d the parts I’ve been waiting for – 86699-0– the single rollers x 4 (plus a spare)
These need to marry up with the 3mm ID X 8mm OD X 4mm bearings to fit the Pz III axles – 86701-186703-2– (4mm ID bearing at far right) – 86705-386707-486709-5– axles fitted, roller supports added – 86711-6 – with double rollers too – 86713-7. You have to remove the knurling on the axle too, otherwise the 3mm ID bearing won’t fit.

The kit is not designed to accommodate the fwd single rollers, so have to adapt it. Spacing from double Rollers is 5cm – 86715-0 – the same as on the rear most roller, (spacing between double rollers is 8cm) – 86717-186719-286721-386723-486725-5.
These shots with the double rollers just dry fitted for effect – 86727-686729-7. Bolting in the single rollers is tricky – there’s no key on the axle head to tighten it against – 86731-886733-986735-10. The front one is worse, as the glacis plate reduces access available...
