NZ 30545 - Going to Oz
« on: June 15, 2017, 12:46:10 PM »
Came across the FB site for the Aust Armour & ArtilleryMuseum in Cairns.
They’re acquiring quite a bit of Armour from all over. But of particular interest to me, they’ve announced acquisition of a M41 on 2nd March . On the site they mention that it’s a kiwi one.
By process of elimination, it looks like its NZ 30545. From the photo posted - 84858-0 - it’s got an early turret, but a mid-late welded hull – the square weld joints at the upper front of the hull make that fairly obvious, as well as the single large splash guards per side, behind the lifting eyes on the glacis plate. These are what the head lights sit atop on mid-late M41’s.
What’s unusual, is all the hinges & stops – look to be 6 – where the engine grille doors are located – they are a feature of early construction hulls, not mid late ones, though it may have been modified for NZ Service.
NZ 30545 had a bit of history with the NZ Army – the original hull was found to have a badly welded crack under the engine, which led to the US replacing the hull – an extract from Jeffrey Plowmans book RNZAC discusses this – * RNZAC Extract - NZ 30545 Problems.pdf (794.06 kB - downloaded 9 times.)

This particular vehicle has spent quite a while in pieces since ending its service with the NZ Army. I found pics of it online – one of which shows the rear left quarter – 84868-2 the 5 stops for the grille doors are evident. THE GTL mount looks to be the later pattern. There are also track deflectors mounted below the left rear lights – not normally seen on NZ vehicles. It looks like the left number 3 road wheel is missing.
It will be a bit of a jigsaw to rebuild. 84860-384862-484864-584866-6
It will be interesting to see how they go about restoring it, and what paint they finish it with – US Olive Drab, British Bronze Green or MERDC Red Desert or something else?

Update - she's now in Oz, receiving much needed TLC
You can clearly see the 6 RHS engine grille stops which would normally indicate an early hull, but not in this case, as mentioned above - 90531-0

This one has the later pattern GTL mounting, welded final drive housings & track deflectors indicating a mid-late construction hull, the LHS 5 engine grill stops tell you it's odd - 90537-1

In case you wondered, the fwd upper hull is still there, just not readily in shot - look through the drivers escape hatch 90533-2 and turret ring visible in these - 90535-390539-4

They look to be doing a solid job on her
