M1 Abrams ....An early version Deployed in Germany.
« on: August 23, 2017, 11:20:32 PM »
Yep, As the title says this will be a build of an early Abrams Tank.

I was trying to decide exactly what version and level of additional armour and extra offensive/defensive kit to weigh the Abrams down with.

Pulling pictures off the net and doing a bit of homework soon showed there are more variants than I expected. I admit to being at a bit of a loss where modern armour is involved at the moment, and it all seemed a bit much untill I delved into the build history of the tank itself.

After that all the models and upgrades seemed to pop into place. I work on the principle that its a modern Tiger 1 tank. and all the twists and turns reflected increased demands of combat and counter measures to counter things on the battlefield that would try to ruin your day. Easy really.

Homework....

I admit this was almost starting to get a bit out of hand ...

Abrams addiction here we come...

I even have a Hooby Engine Abrams bought to scavange from as well. This might well form a basis of another build after I have taken off a few bits.

Anyway, the subject of this build will be an early version M1, a short turret version as deployed in the 1980's in Germany.

I chose it as its the best uncluttered, uncomplicated version of the M1 series.

Snag is it also sports a diffent main gun, 105mm as opposed to the 120mm of the later upgrades have.   Joy !!

Starting point.

I Aquired the lower hull of a Heng Long Abrams.

Wheels, gearboxs rear panel and a smoker ...

I did intend to plonk the Hobby Engine upper on the Heng Long lower - but - I felt it would be too much work to correct and backdate the Hobby Version - so "Collateral Damage" will escape any damage and will live to fight another day ..

Plan B.

There is always a plan B.

Here it is ...

Heng long upper ...

Now the fun can begin ....

Andy

Hi Andy
Nice. Re the 105mm, I'm pretty sure Chris Ludwig offers one to upgrade his Centurion. Reminds me of my Tamiya early M1's, with 105mm - though only 1/35th.
3 at a time - as bad as me with M41's.... just saying....

Hi Mal .... I have a plan in mind for the 105 just need to check out a few points first.

I have some photos of the early 1/35 scale M1 - handy for reference. Looked to be a tidy model.

3 yes - these are tanks are addictive. I also have three Pershings - but thats another story in itself !!

OK - Just time for a quick assesment of what needs to be done.

I am starting with the turret first as that is where most of the backdating needs to be done.

So....

Nice detail here - shame it has to go ..the large panels that form the armour bin covers at the rear of the turret are incorrect for my M1 - it needs three - lower profile panels instead.

The armoured mount for the turret mounted APU - auxiliary power unit - has to go as it was too early for it and the rear turret rack as well.

Shame really as the rear opening for the cables is spot on.

Still you cannot make omlettes without frightening a few chickens.....or somthing along those lines..

The turret storage boxes also need to be reduced by two boxes as well.

Fontal armour too deep and the wrong gun - needs to be a 105mm - not the rather nicely done 120mm that we have at the moment.

Commanders optic sight will need to go - and all of its fittings too.

Oh .. the mantlet is also wrong as well ....sigh...

All rear stowage mounts also ned to go as well.

Should keep me quiet for a bit ....

Andy

Yikes!! Indeed Ed ....Trust me, I have a Razor Saw.....

Now its high time to do a series of Removals...

Commanders sight gone ....

Gunners doghouse sight housing .....gone.

Commanders copola followed after a brief but uneven tussle..

Easy stuff done turret -wise for now.

Making good again ...

Scrap plastic fills the hole,

Melted glue scrap plastic slurry welds another circle of plastic into place.

Not pretty at this point but does the job.

Big hole - bye bye rear shell bins and the APU armoured conduit moulding aswell.

Might need to put somthing back in here ...

Still a few tweaks to do - I need to consult my reference photos ...

Andy  ;)

More removals in progress..

Rear engine access flaps have to go.

Both of them..

Further down along the lower hull.

The Biological overpressure system has to go.

Back to the hole in the turret ..

Starting to replace what was cut out....

Not pretty at this stage of the game but if you roll your sleves up and get on with it, it really is fun

The turret is going to need all the structural strength it can for the next stage of the plastic mayhem ...

Andy  :)

TURETT SHORTENING

Ok, just a few little tasks before the Dremmel comes out..

Marking up some holes I no longer need.

The M1 had no tool boxes fitted on the foreward turret sides.

Plugging with scrap sprue..

Cut off and a bit of filler and sanding to finnish off.

The next part was to work out and mark up the reduction of the additional armour the Heng Long turret is currently wearing.

Quite a bit really ...

Next - the  cut...

And here we are on the fun bit...

As you can see it was easier to fill the holes prior to th cutting.

Looks about right so far..

I don't think the crew need to worry about air conditioning at this point ..

Now it seemed a shame not to use the off cuts ..

This placing gave me the idea of gluing the cutoff outer roof to the inside of the inner turret.

This retains the angles and will make a much stronger joint to the turret front.

More Turret ...

From this ....

Glue pot plastic used as glue and filler ..

Inside the turret I am using it to literaly weld the front turret plates to the inner turrert body.

Back on the outside and a bit of filling and sanding later ...

Plastic strip used to overcome the step in the frontal turret joint.

Other areas have required less work.

Even the rear turret edges needed to be re profiled.

The front identifiction panels were sanded down as well.

Rear turret back shell storage area continues..

Another weld to remove, this time behind the commanders hatch..

Good grief, Andy: at what point does it become easier just to start from scratch?  Wow!  What magic are you up to next?

Very Brave.
Perhaps the title should be " M1 - Hacksaw Attack"?

Dont worry its all going according to plan ....sort of.

It is a lot of work at this stage, and the more you look the more you find !!

However once the turret is sorted it should be lot easier ...........I think ...
